Visual Supports in Real Life

(An Excerpt from 'My Very Own Tool Supply')

On becoming a single parent I had to come up with a way to either be in all places at the same time, doing everything for everyone by myself, or I had to come up with a way to have everyone participate and have the house run smoothly.  My obsessive compulsiveness toward organization, order and cleanliness, made the latter the only option.  So over the past year,  I have come up with visual supports that fit our unique family needs.

All around the house there are visuals that enable my sons to do more than just "live" in the home.  My boys are an intricate part of how the home "runs" and as they participate in their own daily routine, they are learning responsibility and independence at the same time. There are visuals that help with daily routine, living skills and household activities, all of which make the home more comfortable and secure while acting as  a constant learning tool.

While all strategies may not work for every child, I am hoping that you will find something here that may at least help you come up with invaluable techniques of your own.
