Hi, my name is Patrice
and I am originally from Richmond, Virginia.
I graduated from South Carolina State University in 1997
with a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education working with
Trainable Mentally Handicapped (TMH), but having been certified
in the TEACCH and COACH models, the Picture Exchange Communication
System (PECS), TACT (aggression control training) and currently
seeking Autism Endorsement, have spent my 7 years as a certified
ESE teacher with Marion County Schools working with children with
Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
I am proud to say that my work earned me the title of Maplewood
Elementary "Rookie Teacher of the Year" in 1999.
I am extremely serious about my work and constantly searching
for a way to reach children who lack communication and social skills,
but I am also a "kid at heart" and during the year that
I served as "For Sibs Only" Program Director I enjoyed
putting together "For Sibs Only" programs and having fun
with typical children who need to get their mind off of the challenges
of being siblings of children with special needs.
As I work towards my Master's Degree in Special Education, I want
to continue dedicating my time to PHPF's mission by sharing
the invaluable information that will be at my disposal.
For a pastime? Well,
children are my passion and although I have no biological children,
I do have a sister, Destiny aged 14, and a brother, Byron aged 11,
who I mentor along with my 15 Godchildren.
As for my "babies", they are my 2 dogs "Silk"
(a 3-year old black Lab) and Sabastian (a 4-month old Dachshund).
